How to Make Your Outdoors Pet House Winter Ready

October 17, 2018

If you have pets that spend time outdoors, whether it’s a dog, cat or chickens, then having a pet house in your yard might be something you want to invest in.

There’s more to a pet house than a pretty structure. A quality house will be built of solid materials, such as plastic or wood, in order to withstand the elements.

As the fall slowly fades into winter, the cooler temperatures can spell trouble for your outdoor pets. It’s important to give them a warm, comfortable shelter, and a standard house with no added heating just won’t cut it.

If your pets will be outdoors this winter, this is how you can keep them cozy, snug and most importantly- happy.

Install an electric or solar heating box

Heater boxes are convenient and easy. Built for pet houses and chicken coops, you can install this small-sized box on the wall of the home and plug it in to get it heating a space in no time. But, be aware that electric heaters can suck up energy. You can build your own solar powered setup by installing a solar panel on the roof and then hooking the box up to this.

Add a heating lamp

This is commonly used for reptiles, but you can totally use it for other animals as well. A heating lamp is a simple method to heat up a small area. All you do is plug it in and voila, good to go. Be careful with the product you choose, as you want to consider the dangers of a bursting bulb or animals chewing on wires. Some heating lamps are ceramic and others feature a safeguard that surrounds the bulb for protection.

Bedding

If you live in a region that doesn’t get hit too badly by extreme weather, then bedding is enough to do the trick. Heating pads are a great addition that can be plugged in to heat electrically or there are pads that are microwaveable. They take a few seconds to heat and will stay warm for a minimum of 8 hours. Try covering the floor of the pet house with a layer of straw or shavings, which also insulate and offer a warm bed.
