Get Up & Garden: Savvy Summer to Fall Transitions

August 16, 2019

Summer has got us harvesting those juicy watermelons, chillin’ out back by the pool and enjoying the fire pit in the evenings with friends.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end (for a little bit at least) and so, as school starts back up, it’s time to turn our eyes from summer to fall.

You might have been enjoying all that your outdoor living space has to offer during the summer, but did you know that as the seasons change, it’s more important than ever to keep on top of your garden. With fall comes lower temperatures, time changes and different weather patterns.

Here’s our top tips to help you make a super smooth transition from summer to fall- garden style. Your plants will thank you!

Clean up time

Transitional periods are the perfect time to inspect your plants for diseases and undertake a much needed clean up. It’s kind of like a spring cleaning, except it’s fall, and we are talking about your garden, not your home! Carefully inspect each plant bed, removing blotchy leaves and disposing by burning or burying infected parts. This ensures the overall health of your garden going into the fall season.

Pull out those weeds! There is no better time than now to make room for new plants and seasonal vegetables. As well, get rid of those annuals while you’re at it. These plants are done after a year of growth, so don’t expect them to return after a hot summer.

Bring in the babies

Now that summer is over, you can expect temperatures and weather to fluctuate. Which of your beloved plants can take the changes? Hardy plant varieties are fine outdoors, but if you have any that are sensitive, pot them with new soil and bring them inside where there is a consistent temperature.

Plant those vegetables

Fall is a prime time to plant delicious veggies! There are many types that have a short maturity time and thrive in the cold. Opt for tasty favorites, such as spinach, pumpkin, squash, radish, carrots and cabbage.
