All About Clean Outdoor Cushions

June 14, 2019

When you set up your outdoor living area, you are proud of the beautiful rattan furniture, cozy fire pit and plush cushions. After some time, those cushions start to get dirty from constant exposure to the elements. Here’s how you can keep your cushions looking fresh all year long.

How to clean mold and mildew

With rain and moisture along with changing climates, it can be difficult to keep mold and mildew at bay. Luckily, there are plenty of options to scrub away that unsightly mess. First, use a Nylon bush to dust away most of the mold. Use 1 part Borax and 4 parts warm water and apply it generously to the fabric until all of the mold is gone.

How to clean bird droppings

Nothing is worse than sitting on bird doo doo! Unfortunately, your cushions might get a few unwanted presents from your garden’s feathery friends. Don’t fret, bird droppings are easy to clean. Mix 1 tsp of dish soap, 1 tsp of Borax and 1 quart of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray graciously on the stain while scrubbing with a bristle brush until clean.

How to clean oil stains

Outdoor cushions are exposed to oil from various substances, such as body lotions, bug sprays and food. Using powder, like cornstarch, will effectively soak up excess oil. Sprinkle the powder on the oiled cushion and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Scrape it away with a straight edge.

Here are some more tips for keeping your outdoor cushions in tip top shape.

  • Clean spills immediately
  • Use a dry brush to dust them regularly
  • Don’t allow prolonged exposure to moisture
  • Use a water sealant on pillows for added protection
  • Rotate the cushion positions regularly
  • If you’re going to store your cushions for long term, make sure to clean them first
